Ears, nose, throat (ENT) surgery comprises many different types of surgical procedures and is one of the oldest surgical specialties. It is also one of the most elaborate fields of surgery, using advanced technology and encompassing a broad range of procedures including major reconstructive surgery.
Typically, ear surgery is used to correct defects causing hearing loss or impairment. Such procedures include tympanoplasty (reconstruction of the ear drum), stapedectomy (removal of all or part of a bone in the middle ear), and cochlear implants (implantation of a device to stimulate nerve ends within the ear to enable hearing). Myringotomy (insertion of ear tubes to drain fluid in persons with chronic ear infections) is another common procedure.
Care of the nasal cavity and sinuses is one of the primary skills of the ENT specialist. Common Surgical procedures of the nose can include sinus surgery, correction of a deviated septum (septoplasty) and relief of chronic nasal congestion. Advanced endoscopic surgery for sinus and nasal disorders can eliminate the need for external incisions and major surgery.
The ENT specialist is also called upon to manage diseases of the larynx (voice box) and the esophagus including disorders of the voice, respiration (breathing) and problems swallowing. Surgery of the throat includes removal of tonsils (tonsillectomy) or adenoids (adenoidectomy). Tonsils and adenoids are lymph tissue that help in the bodys defenses to fight infection. The tonsils and adenoids can get chronically infected, in which case surgical removal is usually required. Chronic inflammation of the adenoids can also cause repeated middle ear infections that can ultimately impair hearing.
Recovery for ENT surgery depends on the procedure and health of the patient. Because of the high possibilty of infections, cleansing and dressing changes of the wound as well as postoperative follow-up with the ENT surgeon is essential. Patients may need to stay in the hospital for eight to 10 hours for procedures such as tonsillectomy depending on the anesthesia, or they may be admitted for a few days for more complicated procedures.
BronchoscopyA bronchoscopy is a procedure that is typically performed on patients that suffer from lung complications. Bleeding in the lungs, lung disease, lung cancer, chronic cough and airway problems are the most common complications that usually call for such a procedure.

Grommet InsertionA grommet insertion is a tiny tube placed inside the ear drum which allows air to pass through the eardrum into the middle ear. The ear is essentially made of three parts: the inner, outer and middle parts. The middle ear acts as an airspace and it is attached to the back of the nose. When there is a build up of fluid in the middle ear, it cannot drain as there is no drainage passage in the back of the nose.
Grommet RemovalA grommet removal is a procedure performed on patients that have previously suffered from fluid build up in the middle ear. Before the removal procedure, individuals must first undergo a procedure known as a grommet insertion, roughly a year prior to the removal. The grommet is a small tube inserted in the eardrum that allows excess fluid to drain from the middle ear and creates an air passage between the middle, inner and outer ear.
LaryngectomyA laryngectomy is the surgical removal of the larynx
SeptoplastyA septoplasty is a medical procedure used to correct a deviated septum. The naval septum is the cartilage and bone partition the separates and divides the two navel cavities in the nose. Ideally the septum separates the nose into two equal halves. When the septum deviates or shifts to one of the nasal cavities more than the other, it limits airflow, often times resulting in serious sinus problems.
TonsillectomyA tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure wherein the tonsils (and sometimes the adenoids) are removed. It is generally performed when the patient has experienced frequent bouts of tonsillitis, has chronic tonsillitis or has multiple bouts of peritonsillar abscess.
TympanoplastyMost eardrum perforations are the result of a previous infection to the region. Usually the perforation heals on its own, especially in children. Many ear, nose and throat doctors first course of treatment for a perforated eardrum is to prescribe antibiotics to allow the eardrum to dry and self-heal. If this approach is unsuccessful, tympanoplasty is a surgical procedure to reconstruct a perforated eardrum.
